How Does Waxing Work?

It's pretty simple. Waxing gets to the root of unwanted hair problems - literally. Wax is spread over the hair and as it dries, it gets a good grip on the hair shaft. When the wax is quickly pulled away, the hair goes with it revealing smooth, luxurious skin. Easy right? Although waxing is pretty easy, you may have heard about the ouch factor associated with it. After all, it does involve pulling hair out by the root. While the waxing process may sound intense at first, there are several ways to reduce the discomfort, and the advantages of this method are huge. Waxing leaves skin extremely smooth. Because hair is removed from below the skin's surface, the results are super long lasting - up to 8 weeks.* Add that to the affordability and professional results of at-home waxing, and you've got a win-win situation. So let's tame any potential discomfort with easy-to-master tips for waxing yourself at home.

Before and After Waxing Care Guide

Take your waxing experience to the next level by incorporating these steps into your routine.

Pre-Wax Tips

  • Find the right locale. Make sure you have comfortable seating, good lighting and adequate privacy. You probably don't want visitors when waxing the more private areas of your body.
  • Hydrate. It may sound simple, but drinking plenty of water is key to all-around good health and grooming. It also helps prevent ingrown hairs when waxing.
  • Make a fresh start. Exfoliate 24 hours before waxing to create ultra-smooth skin and prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Get squeaky clean. Waxing works best on skin that is free of oils, lotion and sweat. So shortly before applying the wax, wash skin with soap and water and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Powder up. You can also apply a light dusting of powder so perspiration doesn't interfere with the wax sticking to your skin properly.
  • Shorten it up. Waxing is an effective hair removal solution, but before you wax, make sure hair is trimmed to no longer than a 1/2 inch in length. This will make the process easier and reduce pain.
  • Relax, you've got this. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Anxiety only multiplies and heightens discomfort. Who needs that? So set the mood - candles, music, breathing exercises, all of the above, none of the above, or something entirely different. Do whatever makes you feel best.

Post-Wax Care

  • Be cool. Place a cold compress or cool, damp cloth on the skin immediately after removing the wax to soothe any stinging sensation or redness that might occur.
  • Moisturize. In addition to internal hydration, your freshly waxed skin will deeply appreciate being pampered with your favorite cream or lotion. Baby oil or the post wipes included with the Wax Ready-Strips are excellent options. Either can be used to remove any leftover wax residue.
  • Be gentle. Newly waxed skin is more sensitive. It's best to avoid perfumed or scented skin care products for at least 24 hours after waxing.
  • It's OK, be impressed. Luxuriate in the softness or your freshly waxed skin.
  • Stay on top of it. Establish a regular waxing routine. Regular maintenance goes a long way in improving results and reducing discomfort.
